HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: During the Mughal rule, Guru Gobind Singh Ji reached Mehdiana, delighting the sangats of Raikot, Long Jatpura and Manunke. Seeing the holy water of this pond (also known as Dhaab), Guru Sahib stayed here. There was no population in this area for two or three miles at that time. At this Dhaab, Shri Guru Gobind Singh and the Singhs bathed and brushed their teeth using tree twigs. Then Guru Sahib, started meditating intently, concentrated on Nirankar and accepted the God’s decision.
Bhai Daya Singh inquired what they should do next while Guru Gobind Singh was meditating. Guru Gobind Singh’s response encouraged his followers to trust in God’s will because they had done nothing wrong.
Guru Sahib immediately raised his sword to his chest and said, “Bhai Daya Singh, I am acquitted with responsibility” Guru Sahib humbly begged, “Singh and the lion are the kings of the same forest. Singho! Trust in the Formless One.”
Bhai Daya Singh again appealed to Patshah Guru Dev in the form of Sangat.
Guru Sahib humbly said, “Sangat is bigger than Guru. Hearing the plea of Kashmiri Pandits, father left Delhi, we left Anandpur at the request of Sangat, then we left Chamkaur fort at the request of Sangat.” It was evening while contemplating, and at the request of the Sangat, Guru Sahib made up his mind to write the Jafarnama here. There was no other place to stay so Guru Sahib spent the night in village Chakkar. The next day passing through village Takhtupura at village Dina Sahib, Guru Ji decided to stay with Lakhmeer and Sameer. It was here that he wrote the Jafarnama and sent the same to Aurangzeb at Aurangabad through Bhai Daya Singh and Bhai Dharam Singh.
This place is blessed by Guru Ji, whosoever comes here with hope never goes in pain.
Few decades back Gurdwara Mehdiana Sahib looked like a forest with dense trees and bushes all around the place of worship. The gurdwara was not properly developed or maintained, and there was no habitation within two to three miles (5 km). Many years before, the people living in the village of Lakha, Manuke Malla, Chakkar Diharke voluntarily started the reconstruction of the Gurdwara. Later, Jathedar Jora Singh Lakha took charge of its development, making Mehdiana Sahib a popular pilgrimage destination. When Lakha began work on the gurdwara in 1972, only a few acres were attached to it, but the gurdwara complex eventually grew to cover 25 acres.
According to Jathedar Zora Singh Lakha, the place was a roofless building in 1972. The walls of the porch were about to collapse, and everything else seemed to fall apart.
No cover or Rumala Sahib was put at the place of sactorum where the holy book “Guru Granth Sahib” is placed. At the time of commencement of the voluntary service for the construction of the Gurdwara Sahib happened, it only had one acre of land.
But now Sangat from home and abroad is contributing a lot by investing body, mind and money at this place.
The beautiful view of the Gurdwara Sahib: This gurdwara is an excellent example of Sikh architecture. Its construction has cost crores of rupees. Here you can see exquisite meenakari work. A picture of Bhai Gurdas dictating the “Bhagtan di bani” to the fifth guru is engraved on t at the eighth floor of the building. On the gurdwara’s walls are engraved images of Guru Gobind Singh’s work as well as his hymns, and on the main door is depicted Bhai Daya Singh Hura riding the Guru’s horse. Also the sanctorum in this gurdwara is beautifully decorated.
Holy and Modern Sarovar (Modern Sarovar): The foundation stone of the Sarovar of Gurdwara Sahib was laid in 1818 by Singh
Sahib Sadhu Singh Bhora and the foundation stone of the modern Sarovar was laid by Sant Avtar Singh Ji of Badhnikala. At the place of the sarovar there was a mound of water. When Guru Gobind Singh stayed at Lamjatpura for 21 days, he used to come to this mound every day. Jathedar Zora Singh intends to develop the area surrounding this one and a half acre sarovar by building four more high springs to divert the flow of water outside the sarovar so that pilgrims should pass through the water source that is flowing from the sarovar. He wants that the sarovar’s sanctity be preserved as it is an Amrit for everyone.
